Civic issues
Topics getting the most attention in Temecula public meetings, ranked by how frequently they come up.
Cancellation of District 1 and 3 council elections
No challengers filed against the incumbents in Districts 1 and 3, so those residents won't vote for their council representatives this November — Rahn and Kalfus are simply reappointed. District 5 voters still get a competitive race with four candidates.
November 2026 election cancellation for Districts 1 and 3
With unopposed candidates in Districts 1 and 3, the council could appoint them and cancel that portion of the November 3 election, saving taxpayers the cost of an uncontested race. No decision was made yet — the council gave general direction only.
Commercial Trash Rate Increase
Businesses will pay about $8 more per month on average for commercial trash service, driven mostly by a 14.92% county landfill fee hike plus 2.77% CPI. Rates apply retroactively to July 1.
Citywide tree trimming contract award
The city awarded an $800,000, two-year tree trimming contract to Mariposa Tree Management, replacing West Coast Arborist, which served Temecula for 18 years. WCA asked the council to postpone while it appeals the bid evaluation, but the council approved the item anyway.
